“They’ve refused to retire” — Portable says Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy and Olamide have ruled for over 10 years

Nigerian singer Portable has claimed that Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy and Olamide have dominated the Nigerian music industry for more than a decade and have remained at the top without giving way for other artistes to take over.

Speaking during a recent conversation, Portable compared the current generation of Afrobeats stars with earlier Nigerian music stars, arguing that artistes such as Timaya, 2Baba and Eedris Abdulkareem had their time at the top before newer stars emerged.

According to him, however, Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy and Olamide have remained dominant for years and continue to occupy major spaces in the industry.

“Four artistes have been reigning in Nigeria for over 10 years. Timaya, 2Face and Eedris Abdulkareem came, reigned and left, but Davido, Olamide, Burna Boy and Wizkid have refused to retire and let other artistes reign,” Portable said.

The controversial singer noted that although other artistes are making progress, many remain outside the mainstream spotlight.

He also compared the situation to the Fuji music industry, where he said a few established stars have continued to dominate the genre for years.

Portable’s comments have since sparked conversations about longevity, competition and whether Nigeria’s biggest music stars are leaving enough room for the next generation of artistes to rise.
